I remember when I met Britt...we were both in the Phoenix pageant world (still weird for me to say about myself sometimes); and I'm pretty sure we were at some event Ms. Kim was having (Britt won Miss Black Arizona the year before I did). Britt had this presence about her that commanded the rooms she walked into...and I remember telling myself that if I were going to win this pageant, I was going to need that same energy!! A few months later, Britt crowned me when I took home the title of Miss Black Arizona. For some reason though, our paths never really seemed to cross each other much, unless Ms. Kim asked us to both participate in something pageant related. I wouldn't say it had anything to do with disliking each other, I just think we were going down different paths. Over the years I have watched Britt, via social media, and been in awe of the things she has accomplished. She is truly a trailblazer creating a path and safe place for Black Women to be EMPOWERED to be AMAZING and to CELEBRATE themselves and others without shame. I am truly thankful for our paths crossing so many years ago, and for the encouragement that I get from the community that she has created. Thank you Britt for agreeing to be featured!!
I introduce you to the Beautiful Trailblazer Britt Glover
*Generally
speaking, what was your childhood like?
I grew up
on the Southside of Phoenix. I had three little brothers, and I was the oldest.
I was always feeling the need to be responsible and a role model for them.
*What have
you learned over your lifetime that you’d like to share with the younger generation?
Working
your life away in corporate America is a trap and you will be trading your life
for money. Entrepreneurship is the key so find your hustle or find someone to
hustle alongside you.
*What has
the journey/process been like for you to get to where you are today?
2020 was the year of clear vision, I realized I
wasn’t where I wanted to be in life even though I was doing ok. I was a little
rushed in some places, I had to deal with some steep learning curves as I was
jumping head first into a world that I had a small starting knowledge base
with. I had to quickly learn that persistence was key to moving ahead in the
ways that would bring success to my vision. I work day and night of finding
balance in all parts of my life and continuing to work toward the woman that I
truly want to become.
*What
sacrifices have you had to endure to get to where you are today?
I’m a “see something, say something” type of person, who has no problem speaking out for myself or others in the face of injustice or when we have been wronged. This sometimes leads to not being well liked by those resistant to change, because I will advocate for what is right, even if it means you don’t like me. Integrity is really important to me, so I have sacrificed opportunities and relationships that I feel would make me compromise my integrity.
*What do
you do for a living?
I am a
fraud investigator by day and a hustler by night. But seriously, I also do own
a budding clothing boutique as well.
*What
motivates you the most?
When I
die, I want people to talk about how I changed their lives. I do not want to
live and die like cattle. I want to make sure that my life was meaningful and
full of purpose. This is what motivates me to keep pushing forward.
*You are a
complete BOSS…as a woman, why do you feel like creating this path for yourself
was/is necessary?
I was
thinking that I was getting ahead by finding success in the ways the world was
telling me were acceptable. However, I realized that I was miserable and I
didn’t feel the success for myself. It was important for me to walk a path that
left me feeling whole and fulfilled, with that being said I saw the opportunity
for me to change for the better and I took it without hesitation. It was
important to prove to myself that I was strong enough to stand on my own within
my truest identity.
What was
it like where you grew up?
I grew up
on the South Side. I was a kid in the 90’s we played outside. Everybody knew
everybody, we had the candy lady around the corner. It is a blessing that I got
to grow up with people in my childhood who have built their foundation here in
their adult lives as well.
Describe
your most important friendship(s).
My most
important friendships came from friends who had seen me at my worst and they
did not leave me but instead encouraged me to be my very best, followed thru
with being there for me when I needed them, did what they said they were gonna
do, provided community and understanding and love whenever I needed it.
What did
you want to be when you grew up?
I always
thought that I would be a lawyer or a news anchor. My parents have old school
videos of me reporting live from family events and gatherings. I knew I wanted
to do something where I could connect to others in that way.
Do you think
a person needs to first overcome serious setbacks or challenges to be truly
successful?
Yes, if
you aren’t able to truly take a look at yourself and help yourself heal so that
you can put your best foot forward then you will always be your own biggest obstacle.
What would
you like your children and grandchildren to remember about you?
I want my
family to say that I was supportive of whoever that they chose to be and that I
was loving and kind. I also want them to remember that I passed along wisdom
and money to them as well to help them on their journey.
Who was
the most influential person to you as a child?
My mother.
I remember looking at her and wanting to be like her. She would wear
turtlenecks and I needed to have a turtleneck too. She was a hard worker and a
good mother and I remember just wanting to be those same things. So I would
spend so much time trying to model myself after her example.
Anything
you would like to say about your “platform” “area of expertise” “business” or
anything at all?
First, I
want to say, “It’s not a group, Sis.” Even though it may seem like that from
the outside looking in. We are looking to create a community of black women who
feel empowered to be everything that they can and want to be. There are no
limits, this is about making the change in the world that I needed to see for
myself.
